ACHILLES CRIES
Sidney Burris

Mired in the broad maw of a lulled war.
Agamemnon: overbearing, insufferable.
And having just taken Briseis away.
So: slaked lust everywhere.
But not by the sea where Achilles is, not there.
There: one kind of hell
When the sea is heaving, the sea is gray.
And absence, a despair.

Lesson: the heaving, gray sea was endless then.
As it is now. And there are the dreams.
of her. Of rage. Of black hulls turned red in the sun. Of lies.
Where Achilles is now he cannot lead his men.
Or so he believes. Or so it seems.
And Achilles cries.
